Biography
Pedro America was born April 29, 1843 in the city of Ares , the state of Paraiba , in a simple poor family. In 1854, the American family moved to Rio de Janeiro , where Pedro entered the Pedro II College . Later, America studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, and in 1859 went to France . There he studied at the Paris School of Fine Arts, was a student of Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres and Hippolyt Flandrin. He studied with Victor Meyrellis and José Almeida Junior .
Returning to Brazil in 1864 , America created a whole series of masterpieces, including his most famous painting Independence or Death ( Independência ou Morte ), which depicts the declaration of independence of Brazil . Now this canvas is stored in the Paulista Museum in Sao Paulo .
With the establishment of the Republic of America, he was elected to the Constitutional Assembly of Brazil (1889).
Pedro America died in Florence in 1905 . His body was taken to Rio de Janeiro and buried in the cemetery of San Juan Batista.
