Creation History
After the dissolution of the Sowing project in November 1984, Yegor Letov and Konstantin Ryabinov form a group called Civil Defense. Initially, they decided to focus on studio recordings, since the question of live performances of the group was not raised then [1] . Recording was carried out in a variety of conditions, ranging from home to semi-studio. The result was a large number of variants of this recording, some of which were known as bootlegs . In general, according to Letov himself, the records were of poor quality. Having never had time to release the final versions of the album, the group was dispersed by the KGB . Konstantin Ryabinov was sent to the army, Yegor Letov was taken for compulsory treatment to a psychiatric hospital . Having freed himself, Letov single-handedly re-recorded some of the material of these years, releasing the acoustic bootleg "Red Album" (officially released under the title " Bead Play in Front of the Pigs "). Also, some of the early things went into the electrical "official" albums of 1987 ( Mousetrap and Red Album ).
After Ryabinov returned from the army, from January 12 to 22, 1988, an attempt was made to restore the early material. Some things were completely rewritten, some were recreated with the help of preserved recordings. Further, the resulting material was divided into two parts - earlier compositions were included in “Foul Youth”, later ones were included in the album “ Optimism ”. When reissued in 2005, the album was supplemented with bonus tracks from previously unreleased material [2] . In 2011 , an LP reissue was released.
