The construction of the plant began in April 1930 [6] in the steppe behind the Losevo station [7] , US citizen Leon A. Swajian, who was subsequently awarded the Order of Lenin, was appointed chief engineer for the construction of KhTZ. On May 1, 1931, the tool case was put into operation (which began production of tools and equipment to meet the needs of the ongoing construction of the plant), September 30, 1931 the construction was completed (at that time the plant consisted of 12 workshops) [8] .
On October 1, 1931, the plant was launched [9] . In October 1931, the plant began producing a wheeled tractor SKhTZ 15/30 [6] , which was equipped with a 30 horsepower kerosene engine and developed a speed of up to 7.4 km / h. Simultaneously with the plant, the village of KhTZ was built [10] .
In 1932, Alexander Bruskin became the director of the Kharkov Tractor Plant. 1932, the first year of operation of the plant after launch, KhTZ completed with successful indicators: 16,044 tractors left the assembly line, 16,333 were delivered. In addition, 1,507 engines were manufactured; gray cast iron - 16,950 tons; malleable cast iron - 596 tons; non-ferrous metals - 1296 tons; hot stampings - 17,445 tons.
In 1933, KhTZ mastered the production of designs of diesel engines of an autotractor type. On May 26, KhTZ reported on the fulfillment of obligations to issue 121 engines at the end of May. And by September 22, 1933, KhTZ had mastered a design capacity of 145 tractors per day. In early October 1933, the People's Commissar Sergo Ordzhonikidze visited the plant. He praised the activities of HTZ employees. The plant ahead of schedule, by December 20, fulfilled the annual plan for gross output by 100.4 percent, for 28 months 28 285 tractors were produced, 215 of which were manufactured in excess of the plan.
Until the end of the first five-year plan , which ended in 1932, the plant produced 17,374 tractors [11] .
In 1934, 20 Austrian political emigrants ( Schutzbund activists, participants in the armed uprising in February 1934 ) were employed at KhTZ, who were trained by turners, milling machines and locksmiths and were employed at the plant’s training plant [12] .
In 1935, the 100,000th tractor came off the assembly line, in 1936, the 150,000th tractor came off the assembly line.
On September 17, 1937, the plant began serial production of the SKHTZ-NATI caterpillar tractor [6] . It is worth noting that if the design of American developers was at the heart of SKhTZ 15/30 , then SKHTZ-NATI was the first mass-produced tractor with a domestic design. In addition, in the pre-war period, the plant produced a KhTZ-T2G gas generator tractor [10] .
After the start of World War II , the production of military products was increased, in September - October 1941 the plant produced light tanks T-16 ( KhTZ-16 ).
As the front line approached the city, the plant was evacuated - first to Stalingrad , and then to Rubtsovsk of the Altai Territory [6] , where the Altai Tractor Plant [9] was built on the basis of KhTZ, which in 1942 produced the first tractor ASHTZ-NATI. After the liberation of Kharkov, in August 1943 the restoration of the factory buildings destroyed during the occupation began, in late 1944 the factory produced its first products [9] .
In 1947, the plant began production of the HTZ-7 tractor [9] .

In 1961, the KhTZ training department began work, a polytechnic center for labor training and vocational guidance for students (from 1964 to 1973, the head of which was an innovative teacher, experimenter P. A. Yarmolenko ) [13] .
In 1962, the plant began production of the T-74 arable tractor [6] .

On July 1, 2009 KhTZ suspended production [27] until September 1, 2009 due to the lack of orders [28] . In the future, KhTZ once again suspended production (in the period from December 2009 to March 4, 2010), in connection with the movement of machine equipment [29]
In 2010, KhTZ began using components manufactured by the People's Republic of China in the manufacture of tractors, and in October 2013, it completely stopped purchasing bridges from the Lozovsky Forge-Mechanical Plant for wheeled tractors in favor of Chinese-made bridges [30] . In 2014, the Kharkov Tractor Plant took part in the International Specialized Exhibition of Agricultural Machinery AGROSALON-2014 in Moscow. [42] At the exhibition, the equipment of the Kharkov Tractor Plant was first presented in a new color - turquoise - this is the color of the success of KhTZ, with which the plant had great achievements in the past. An innovative model range of turquoise tractors was shown at the exposition: [42] the KhTZ-240K tractor with the YaMZ-536 engine - a modern new engine that meets European norms and standards, with a new fuel injection system to reduce fuel consumption, with a new cab with a central landing the operator, which improves working conditions when working on transport, as well as when working with a reversible plow, with a transfer case with a constant front and connected rear axle, which allows to increase the stability of the tractor in trans tailors, increase traction characteristics when working with implements, as well as increase directional stability during traction operations, with polymer cladding and wings made by injection molding, which give the tractor a modern look, as well as reliability and durability during operation; [42] the KhTZ-181 tractor with a new six-roller torsion-balancing suspension, which allows to reduce the specific pressure on the soil by increasing the base, increasing the traction and hitching characteristics, reduces longitudinal-angular vibrations and improves the tractor’s smoothness, increases self-cleaning, with a new variable pump productivity, which allows rationally loading the tractor engine depending on the loads created by the implements mounted with it, which significantly saves fuel; [42] an HTZ-3512 tractor with a three-cylinder liquid-cooled engine is economical and unpretentious in operation, which allows the installation of a standard heater, which makes it possible to work in the cold season in various climatic zones, with hydrostatic steering, which reduces the effort on the steering wheel, with a polymer lining, which improved the appearance of the tractor, is less susceptible to corrosion than metal, easy to maintain, a new single cab equipped with a safety cage, made according to about modern requirements, with ventilation in the summer and heating in the winter; [42] a TS-5 bulldozer with a four-wheeled torsion-balancer suspension, the reinforced design of which makes it possible to increase its reliability, durability, improve traction and coupling characteristics, increase ride smoothness, increase self-cleaning, with a gearbox with fast reverse, which allows you to shift gears forward -Back, without breaking the power flow within the same range (without squeezing the clutch); [42] The Kharkov Tractor Plant also presented at its booth a new two-threaded continuously variable hydraulic-volume-mechanical transmission (GHMT) of a wheeled tractor, which is an option in picking wheeled tractors of the ХТЗ-170/240 series as an alternative to the serial step-by-step mechanical gearbox (KP) 16x8 and It is designed for engines with a power of 125 ... 176 kW (170 ... 240 hp). The new box aroused great interest among foreign agricultural producers, who took pictures of it from different angles and asked questions to the developers of this site. [42]

Toidze, erected in 1956, was demolished by vandals on the night of April 10-11, 2015. [44] "For the plant and its employees, the monument was a symbol of labor victories and achievements of the factory workers. With this act, bandits, under cover of darkness, not only insulted and broke the property of the three thousandth factory staff, but also insulted more than 25 thousand factory veterans who took part in the creation of heavy industry in Ukraine, "- said in a statement to the Kharkov Tractor Plant.
