Known by his stage name Mac Miller ( Mac Miller ) (formerly Easy Mac ). Also, when recording jazz tracks, I used the pseudonym Larry Lovestein . As a producer, he worked with Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole , Earl Sweatshirt , Lil B and Tyler, The Creator .

Biography

Early life

Born January 19, 1992 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . Mother Karen Myers was a photographer, and Father Mark McCormick was an architect [3] [4] . The father was a Christian, and the mother was Jewish. Miller was raised as a Jew and carried his “ bar mitzvu ” [5] [6] , celebrated Jewish holidays [7] . Because of his religion, he called himself "the coolest Jewish rapper," in response to Drake's claim to be "the best Jew in a rap game" [5] . He spent his childhood in Point Breeze, which is part of Pittsburgh [3] [8] . Attended the Winchester Thurston School and Taylor Alderdice High School. He began taking piano lessons from the age of six [9] . In high school, Miller focused on hip-hop, later noting: “As soon as I turned 15, I took a serious step that completely changed my life ... I used to go in for sports, all sports, I went to all school parties. But as soon as I learned that hip-hop, in general, looks like work, that was all I did. ” [3] He knew how to play the drum set, piano and guitar [10] .

2007-2010: Early Career

Miller first started rap at the age of fourteen. Before that I wanted to be a singer [11] . Before he changed his name to Mac Miller, he was known as the EZ Mac and in 2007 released the But My Mackin 'Ain't Easy mixtape at the age of fifteen. Miller was also part of the rap group The Ill Spoken, along with a rapper from Pittsburgh - Beedie. The Ill Spoken released the mix mix How High in 2008. In 2009, Miller released two The Jukebox mixtapes : Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life before signing a contract with Rostrum Records . In 2009, at the age of 17, he reached the final of the Rhyme Calisthenics battles site [12] .

In early 2010, Miller signed a contract with Rostrum Records. Label president Benji Greenberg met Miller while recording with Wiz Khalifa at ID Labs [13] . Although Greenberg started giving recommendations to Miller, he showed no interest in participating in his work until the artist began working on the KIDS mixtape when, as HitQuarters later said, Greenberg noticed “maturation” in his sound and approach to music ” [ 13] . At this point, Miller began to attract interest from various record companies, but he chose Rostrum because of its location in his hometown and its association with Wiz Khalifa. KIDS was released by the label in August 2010. The mixtape was inspired by the film Kids [3] . A significant breakthrough came at the end of 2010, when Miller went on his first tour, entitled Incredibly Dope Tour , where all the seats were sold [13] .

2011–2012: Best Day Ever and Blue Slide Park

Miller’s fifth release was the Best Day Ever mixtape, which featured the single Donald Trump and Wear My Hat and All Around the World . Donald Trump himself later commented on the video of the single on Twitter : “Who would not be nice?” . Mixtape producers include Just Blaze , 9th Wonder and Chuck English from The Cool Kids. On November 22, 2010, the first video for his single “Knock Knock” was released on YouTube [14] . On March 29, 2011, an EP entitled On and On and Beyond was released. The work of the six tracks was released by Rostrum Records.

Miller announced the release of his first album Blue Slide Park on his YouTube channel on July 5, 2011. [15] In September 2011, it turned out that Miller would release a mixtape called 92 Til Infinity , produced by DJ Jazzy Jeff before the release of the Blue Slide Park album [16] . However, the release never came out.

Miller has released a remix for the song Maroon 5 called “Moves Like Jagger” [17] .

On October 14, 2011, a mixtape of 13 tracks was released under the title I Love Life, Thank You , recorded by Michael Rocks from The Cool Kids, Talib Kweli and Bun B.

In November 2011, Blue Slide Park debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with sales of 144,000 copies in the first week [18] . It was the first independent release that won the Billboard Album Album Chart first since the release of Dogg Food from Tha Dogg Pound in 1995 [19] . In 2011, Miller was one of the eleven rappers represented in this year’s XXL annual Freshman Class list [20] . In 2011, he made his first appearance on VH1 television on Single Ladies , where he played himself. Also in 2011, he was part of MTV Jams Fab Five .

Miller posted a trailer for his video on the track “Missed Calls” on February 15, 2012 [21] . The clip itself was released on June 22, 2012 [22] . On March 23, 2012, Miller released his seventh mixtape called Macadelic . The track “Loud” was released as a separate single and reached 53 position on the Billboard Hot 100 . Miller also released a video for the track “Thoughts From A Balcony” . In June 2012, the premiere of the song "Onaroll" on YouTube. The track was produced by Farrell Williams . On August 7, 2012, another single from Pink Slime called “Glow” was released , available for free download [23] . On September 1, 2012, another free song was released under the name “PlaneCarBoat” , which was recorded on the west coast rapper Schoolboy Q.

November 21, 2012 Mac Miller under the pseudonym Larry Lovestain released a jazz mixtape called You . In early 2013, Mack released his second studio album, Watching Movies With The Sound Off.

2012–2013: Watching Movies with the Sound Off

On October 14, Miller announced that Pink Slime will be released before the end of 2012 and the second album Watching Movies with the Sound Off will be released in early 2013 [24] [25] . Schoolboy Q , Ab-Soul , Earl Svetshot , Tyler, the Creator , Action Bronson and Jay Electronica were invited to record the album [19] [26] . Miller himself said that the album is “very introspective and quite personal ...” [27] .

Miller also announced plans to release 92 Til Infinity with DJ Jazzy Jeff in early 2013. [28] MTV2 has a series of six episodes called Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family ( Mac Miller and the coolest family ).

March 4, 2013 Miller released a new mixtape Run-On Sentences Vol. 1 , which presents the instrumental works made by Miller under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman [29] . Miller announced on May 2, 2013 at UStream and Twitter that Watching Movies with the Sound Off will be released on June 18, 2013. [30] The album was met with positive reviews, and most critics drew attention to the psychedelic sound. The album also received commercial success, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, collecting 101,000 copies in the first week [31] . The album released three singles "SDS" , "Watching Movies" and "Goosebumpz" .

In early 2013, Miller founded his own record label REMember Music , named after a deceased friend [11] . He also produced the Stolen Youth mixtape by Vince Staples from the Odd Future band [11] . In October 2013, he toured Europe with Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz [32] . On October 31, 2013, Miller released a new mixtape called Delusional Thomas [33] . On December 17, 2013, Miller released his first live album, Live from Space . He starts working with Farrell Williams again on the Pink Slime EP, which will be released in 2014. [34] He also worked on four separate projects and wrote at least seven songs for each. In an interview with MTV, he said that they were included in his solo Mac Miller album , which was thus formed by chance [35] .

2014–2015: a deal with Warner Bros. and GO: OD AM

On January 14, 2014, Miller announced that he was not extending the contract with Rostrum Records [36] [37] . On May 11, 2014, Miller independently released his tenth solo mixtape of Faces [38] . On October 21, 2014, it became known that Miller had signed a distribution contract deal for his REMember Music label with Warner Bros. Records for 10 million dollars [39] . The second season of the reality TV show MTV2 Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family was released in 2014. On July 30, 2015, Miller announced that he had completed work on his third studio album, which will be his main debut on the label [40] . On August 5, 2015, Miller announced the name of his album GO: OD AM with a release date of September 18, 2015. It also became known that the music video for the first single “100 Grandkids” will be released on August 6 [41] .

2016–2018: The Divine Feminine and Swimming

On July 28, 2016, Miller announced his fourth album, The Divine Feminine, and debuted with the first single, "Dang!" , In which Anderson Pak [42] [43] participated. The album was released on September 16 and debuted on the 2nd place in the Billboard 200 album chart and on the 1st place on the chart of the best R & B / hip-hop albums [44] . 48,000 copies were sold. May 30, 2018 was released "Small Worlds" , the first single from the fifth studio album Swimming . The album was announced on July 13, and released on August 3. Received positive reviews, such as 7.5 on Pitchfork , describing the album as consisting of "brooding soul and warm funk" and a study of a broken heart, its own mental health problems [46] . Swimming debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 album charts and the best R & B / hip-hop albums with 66,000 copies sold [44] [45] .

Death

Miller died of a drug overdose at his home in Studio City ( Los Angeles ) on September 7, 2018 [47] . He was found immobilized around noon on the same day, after his friend called 911 and reported cardiac arrest. Miller was declared dead at the scene upon the arrival of the authorities [48] . On the day of his death, the shooting of the clip was planned [49] . After the autopsy [50], the official cause of death was not announced by members of his family [51] . On September 11, thousands of fans gathered in honor of the late rapper at Blue Slide Park in Pittsburgh [52] . Miller was buried in Homewood Cemetery in his hometown of Pittsburgh, at a Jewish funeral [53] . On November 5, 2018, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office announced that Miller died from an accidental drug overdose due to the “mixed drug toxicity” of fentanyl , alcohol, and cocaine [54] .

Personal life

Miller said he became addicted to a combination of promethazine and codeine , known as “purple drank ” or “thin”, which he began to take to cope with the stress he experienced during his Macadelic Tour in 2012 . In January 2013, Miller told the Complex : “I love lin; it's great. I was not happy, and I sat on the line ... I was very spoiled the whole time, I was bad. My friends couldn't even look at me that way. I was lost. ” [19] During Miller's addiction, his childhood friend, Jimmy Merton, said: “I saw him in the state in which I remember myself — you screwed up because you feel you need to. You're trying to get away from everything. After how much he took, it's incredible that he stopped. This is definitely one of the most impressive things he has ever done . ” Miller quit taking promethazine in November 2012, before he began filming his reality show Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family [19] .

Miller was in a long-term relationship with a woman whom he met in high school. Many of the songs on his Macadelic mixtape were about their relationship [55] . He met with the singer Ariana Grande from August 2016 to May 2018 [56] [57] [58] [59] .

Legal issues

In February 2011, during a tour in upstate New York, Miller and his friends were arrested for possession of marijuana, for which they had to spend a night in prison. The case was settled [60] .

On July 9, 2012, Lord Finesse producer filed a $ 10 million lawsuit against Miller, Rostrum Records and DatPiff [61] for using the sample song “Hip 2 Da Game” in the 2010 Miller mixtape “Kool-Aid and Frozen Pizza” [ 62] . In January 2013, the lawsuit was settled out of court, and its provisions remained confidential [63] .

In March 2015, Aquarian Dream filed a lawsuit against Miller for 150 thousand dollars for sampling the song “Yesterday (Was so Nice Today)” in the song “Therapy” on his 2014 Facestape mixtape [64] .

Miller was arrested in May 2018 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as in a collision and escape from the scene with two passengers after allegedly crashed into a force pole and knocked him down. The police arrived at the scene, checked Miller's license plate number and got his address. Miller admitted to the accident when the police arrived at his home [65] . Miller was taken into custody and released on bail of $ 15,000 [66] .
