Biography
Alexander Karl is the son of Prince Alexius Friedrich Christian and Princess Maria Frederic of Hesse-Kassel . Inherited to his father in Anhalt-Bernburg on March 24, 1834. Under Alexander Karl, a railway was laid in Bernburg . Due to a progressive mental illness, the duke retired to Hoyme Castle, where he spent the last years of his life under medical supervision in the company of his chamberlain, artist Wilhelm von Kugelgen.
The wife of Alexander Karl Frederic Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg was appointed co-ruler.
Alexander Karl died without leaving any heirs. Thus, the Anhalt-Bernburg line died out, and the duchy departed Anhalt with its capital in Dessau .
