Martyrs of September

Martyrs of September ( Fr. Martyrs de Septembre , also Fr. Martyrs des Carmes - martyrs of the Carmelite monastery) - a group of Catholic blessed martyrs who suffered from September 2 - 3, 1792 during the massacres committed during the French Revolution of 1789 - 1794 . This group includes 191 people, including 3 bishops, 127 secular (non-religious) priests (including 86 of the Paris Archdiocese ) [1] , 56 monks and 5 lay people. Most of them were kept and killed in the prison, into which the Carmelite monastery was transformed in the territory of the modern VI district of Paris , others - in the prison at the abbey of Saint-Germain , the seminary of Saint-Firmen and the prison of La Force .

The reason these individuals were persecuted was because they rejected the civic organization of the clergy , which subordinated it to secular authorities, and the refusal to swear allegiance to the revolutionary constitution .

  • Jean-Marie du Lau d'Allemans , Archbishop of Arles
  • François-Joseph de La Rochefoucauld-Bayers , Bishop of Beauvais
  • Pierre-Louis de La Rochefoucauld-Bayers , Bishop of Saintes , brother of the previous

Praise

The decree on the martyrdom of this group was signed by Pope Pius XI on October 1, 1926 , beatification took place on October 17, 1926 . Memorial days are set individually, September 2 or 3 .
