In the Christian naming tradition, the name Oia is associated with the venerated Martyr Saint Ia (Persian; † c. 362-364), who suffered persecution and martyrdom in Persia under Shapur II . Being in captivity, she, according to legend, preached the faith in Christ among Persian women and for this she was subjected to prolonged torture and was executed. A record in the Roman martyrology indicates the death of 9,000 Christians in that persecution [2] [3] [4] .

In Catholicism, Saint Iya of Corneville , enlightener of Cornwall ( 5th century ) is also revered. [5]

A. V. Superanskaya and A. V. Suslova noted the name of Oia , consisting of two letters (but of three sounds), as the shortest in the letter among the female calendar names [6] . “Rare, and therefore noticeable,” characterized A. K. Zholkovsky sound combination, forming a name [7] .

Superanskaya and Suslova, on the basis of studying statistics on the names of newborns in Leningrad for several decades, assigned the name to the category of female names that received limited distribution [8] .
