James Ernest Renshaw ( eng. James Ernest Renshaw ; January 3, 1861 , Leamington , Warwickshire - September 2, 1899 , Twyford , Berkshire ) - British tennis player, six-time winner of the Wimbledon men's single and men's doubles. Biography
Born on January 3, 1861 , in Brandon Paraid, Leamington, Warwickshire , in the family of James Renshaw and his wife, Ellen Renshaw (nee - Knight), and was 15 minutes older than his twin brother, William. Educated at Cheltenham College . [2]
Ernest Renshaw died at Waltham St. Lawrence , near Twyford in Berkshire , on September 2, 1899 , at the age of 38, from poisoning with carbolic acid . Although an investigation was carried out, it wasn’t possible to establish whether the tennis player accepted the poisonous substance intentionally, or it all happened by chance [3] [2] .
In 1983 he joined his brother in the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
Sports career
First played at the Wimbledon tournament in 1880 , and immediately reached the quarterfinals, where, in four sets, he was defeated by Edward Woodhouse. During his career in these competitions, he scored only one victory in singles (in 1888, Ernest defeated the challenge in three games, with Herbert Lawford and his brother, the most serious rival), but, besides, he played four more times in the final where he lost to his brother three times and once to Herbert Lawford.
Also, together with his brother, Ernest won five times on the Wimbledon courts in doubles ( 1884 - 1886 , 1888 , 1889 ; this record, after a short time, was surpassed by the Doherty brothers).
From other tournaments in singles Ernest Renshaw won the Championship of Ireland four times ( 1883 , 1887 , 1888 , 1892 ), and once - competitions in Prince's club , in London . In the men's doubles, along with William, he also won the Championship of Ireland four times (1881, 1883, 1884, 1885), in mixed doubles - once, in 1887 , together with 16-year-old Lottie Daud [4] . In addition, Ernest and his brother won three titles at the Oxford University Championship, in the men's doubles [5] (1880, 1881, 1884; the tournament was open to all comers).
The last time the Renshaw brothers took part in competitions in the Wimbledon tournament in 1893 , but, they had to play against each other in the first round and William refused to fight. Ernest was unable to use his chance and lost in the second round, with a score of 6-1, 5-7, 1-6, 6-4, 3-6, Irishman Harold Mahoney .
