Born in Canadian London in the family of a school teacher and factory repairman, the fourth of six children in the family. Having dropped out of college in her hometown, she moved to the UK , where she entered the London school of speech and drama. Her professional debut on the stage and on television took place there. In 1975, Nelligan first appeared on movie screens in the Franco-British melodrama Romantic Englishwoman . In 1979, the actress played Lucy Seward in the British film adaptation of Bram Stoker 's novel " Dracula " with Frank Langella in the title role.
In the early 1980s, Kate Nelligan moved to the United States , where she played actively on Broadway for a decade, receiving four nominations for the Tony Theater Award for her roles. In 1991, the actress became an Academy Award nominee for Best Actress in a supporting role in Barbra Streisand 's romantic drama, Lord of the Tides . In the same year, she won the BAFTA Award for her role as Cora in the melodrama Frankie and Johnny . In the future, the actress continued her regular appearances in films and on television both in the United States and in her homeland in Canada .
