History
The Holy Cross Exaltation Church was built in 1746 - 1755 [1] with donations from representatives of the famous merchant family of the Kishkin : Nikolai, Vasily and Akilina. It is located on the site of a wooden church of the Holy Great Martyr George, who gave the name of one of the main streets of the old city, Yegoryevskaya. [2] In Soviet times, the church was closed, domes and galleries destroyed. Currently, the building belongs to the company Serpukhov Textile, is used as a warehouse. [1] [2]
Architectural Features
The church was built of brick in the form of a massive two-pillar quadruple , covered with a system of box vaults with miniature drums located on them in a scale of the structure. [2] Along all four sides, the temple was surrounded by vaulted arched galleries, the refectory was absent. [2] It had side chapels of St. George and Peter and Paul, as well as a multi-tiered bell tower. [one]
