Flateyri
Flateyri was founded in 1792 as a trading post, and by the XIX century it had become the most important whaling center in Iceland.
In October 1995, an avalanche struck Flateyri, killing 20 people and destroying 29 houses. To date, a special dam has been built here that can save the villagers from such disasters in the future.
