Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore


The Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore ( Latin: Archidioecesis Pondicheriensis et Cuddalorensis ) is the Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in Puducherry , India . The dioceses of Dharmapuri , Kumbakonam , Salem , Tanjor are included in the metropolis of Pondicherry and Kuddalor . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

Content

History

In 1776, the Holy See established the mission of Sui iuris Pondicherry, separating it from the mission sui iuris of Madura (today - Diocese of Tiruchirappalli ). The mission of sui iuris was entrusted to the missionary organization of the Paris Society of Overseas Missions .

On June 14, 1828, the Congregation for the Propaganda of Faith issued a decree Cum christianissimus , according to which the mission sui iuris Pondicherry was transformed into an apostolic prefecture .

On September 1, 1836, Pope Gregory XVI issued the bull Apostolici muneris , which transformed the apostolic prefecture of Pondicherry into the apostolic vicar .

On September 1, 1886, Pope Leo XIII issued the Bull Humanae salutis , which raised the apostolic vicar Pondicherry to the rank of archdiocese.

On September 1, 1889 and May 26, 1930, the Archdiocese of Pondicherry transferred part of its territory for the construction of new dioceses of Kumbakonam and Salem .

On August 7, 1953, the Archdiocese of Pondicherry was renamed the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore.
