Archdiocese of Agra

The Archdiocese of Agra ( Latin: Archidioecesis Agraënsis ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in Agra , India . The Metropolitanate of Agra includes the dioceses of Ajmer , Allabahad , Barreili , Bijnor , Varanasi , Gorakhpur , Jaipur , Jahansi , Lucknow , Meratha , Udaipur . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Agra is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

History

On May 17, 1784, the Holy See established the mission of sui iuris of Hindustan, separating it from the Apostolic Vicariate of the Great Mughals (today - the Archbishopric of Bombay ).

In 1820, the territory of Tibet entered the mission sui iuris of Hindustan and it was renamed the mission sui iuris of Tibet-Hindustan.

On February 7, 1845, the sui iuris mission of Tibet-Hindustan transferred part of its territory in favor of the construction of the new Apostolic Vicariate of Patna (today the Diocese of Allahabad ).

In 1846, the mission of sui iuris of Tibet-Hindustan was transformed into the Apostolic Vicariate of Agra.

On September 1, 1886, Pope Leo XIII issued the Bull Humanae salutis , which transformed the Apostolic Viakariate of Agra into the rank of archdiocese.

In the following years, the Archdiocese of Agra transferred part of its territory in favor of the construction of new church structures:

  • July 1890 - missions of sui iuris of Rajputan (today - Diocese of Ajmer );
  • September 13, 1910 - the Archdiocese of Simla (today - the Archdiocese of Delhi );
  • January 12, 1940 - Diocese of Lucknow ;
  • February 20, 1956 - dioceses of Meratha .
