Round One

Regulations

  • 16 participants were divided into 8 "seedlings" (Austria, England, Brazil, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Uruguay, France) and 8 "unsealed" participants. The appearance of the Turkish national team among the seeded countries, who had never played in the final stages of the world championships, is explained by the fact that the seeded teams were determined before the end of the qualifying tournament, and among them was the Spanish national team, which later lost the qualification (after the extra match and by lot a) the national team of Turkey.
  • Each group included 2 seeded and 2 unseeded teams. Matches were held only seeded against neseyannyh.
  • In the case of a tie, after 90 minutes additional time was assigned - 30 minutes; with an equal score after extra time, a draw was fixed.
  • In case of equality of points, teams at 2-3 places were assigned a replay between these teams.
  • The play-off grid was unusually composed: one half of it was hit and one of the finalists was determined by the teams that took first places in the group, and the second - the second ones (unlike the traditional principle, when in the first round of the playoffs the first places are played against the second ). As a result, the Hungarian national team that won the first place on the way to the final had to play with the acting vice-champion and world champion - Brazil and Uruguay national teams, and the FRG national team that won the second place was not like the lighter rivals - Yugoslavia and Austria.

Group 1

After the opening ceremony of the tournament in Lausanne in the opening match, the Yugoslav national team beat the French team. Milos Milutinovic scored the only goal in a meeting full of hard joints. Brazilians in their debut match in the tournament defeated the Mexican team.

After three days in a full-time duel, the teams of Brazil and Yugoslavia tied. Both teams took two points and deprived the French of a chance to go further. Despite arranging both teams, the rivals had to play extra time, during which the Yugoslavs tried hard to explain to the Brazilians that there was no point in wasting energy. As a result, the teams did not score a single goal in overtime. The French won their second match with some problems. Victory for the Europeans brought the Cop goal from a penalty two minutes before the final whistle. [one]

Group 2

As it turned out at the end of the tournament, in the group "B" met both the finalists of the 1954 World Cup. Even before the start of the competition, the Swiss media claimed that the future championship victor was in Group B, and it meant the Hungarian national team, which three weeks before the tournament defeated the England team with a score of 7: 1. The Hungarians confirmed their status in the group stage, defeating South Korea with a score of 9: 0 and the German national team with a score of 8: 3. In the second half of the match between Hungary and Germany, an event occurred that influenced the course of the World Cup - Werner Librich injured the Hungarian leader Ferenc Puskas . [2]

After a devastating defeat by the Hungarians of the FRG national team, an additional match was to be played with Turkey for the right to enter the playoffs. At the base of the German national team, bags began to bring letters and telegrams with the responses of fans about the match with Hungary. Mentor of the team read out individual letters, including the proposal to hang the head coach Sepp Herberger on the cord, at the general meeting. As a result, motivated Western Germans defeated Turkey with a score of 7: 2. [3]

Group 3

In the third group there was no special fight for vouchers in the playoffs. The Scots brought only 13 players to Switzerland. The current world champions - the national team of Uruguay - won both meetings in the group, beating around the Austrian national team in goal difference, which won two wins. Czechoslovakia and the Scots completed the tournament without scored points and scored goals. [four]

Group 4

In the fourth group, one of the loudest judicial scandals in the tournament took place. Arbitrator of the meeting Switzerland - Italy Mario Viana (Brazil) with a score of 1: 1 15 minutes before the end of the match did not count the legitimate ball of the Italians, seeing Benito Lorenzi offside . And three minutes later, the Italians scored the winning goal of the tournament. Vian was removed from further work at the tournament and the incident was settled there.

Group won the England team, and Italy and Switzerland had to meet in an extra match due to equal points. The home team of the tournament won a confident victory with a score of 4: 1, after which the accusations of helping the judges subsided. [five]

After the end of the championship, the reporter asked the West German midfielder Hans Schaefer which match in the tournament was the most difficult. And the football player answered without hesitation: “Of course with Yugoslavia. This match we had to lose 0: 5, and won 2: 0. That was a real miracle! ” [6]

Berne Carnage

June 27, 1954 at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern after the end of the quarterfinal match Hungary-Brazil, the most grandiose fight in the history of the football world championships took place, which entered the annals as the “Berne carnage”.

The Brazilian Mauro Mauriño provoked rivals and comrades who approached Hungarians Sandor Kocsis and hit him in the face. The fight between the football players, which started after that, continued in the under-the-court building. Since in the corridor Gyula Lorant broke the lamp, the fight took place in the twilight. Everybody took part, especially Puskas, who missed the game due to injury, who siphoned Juan Pinheira into the head and drove the Brazilian into the locker room. He received a siphon blow on the head and head coach of the Hungarian national team Gustav Shebes . He had four stitches on his wounds.

A picture of the Brazilian national team coach Zeze Moreira , attacking the Hungarians with a boot in his hands, went around all the newspapers and brought a lot of money to the author of the photo. Riots were recorded at the stadium. On the cover of the Paris Match magazine, published after the fight, there was a photo in which a young man at the edge of the field beats a policeman's foot. [7]
