Melnikov, Nikolai Prokofievich

Nikolai Prokofievich Melnikov ( 1908 - 1982 ) - Soviet scientist in the field of structural mechanics and theory of metal structures. Laureate of the Lenin Prize and four Stalin Prizes.

Biography

He was born on December 7 (20), 1908 in the village of Byki (now Dobrush district , Gomel region , Belarus ).

  • In 1934 he graduated from the Kiev Civil Engineering Institute .
  • Since 1933 - engineer, senior engineer, team leader, chief project engineer, head of the department of industrial structures at the Giprostalmost Institute.
  • Since 1942 - manager of the Moscow branch, deputy director, chief engineer of the State Union Design Office "Stalkonstruktsiya".
  • In 1944 - 1982, N. P. Melnikov was the director of the ProjectStalkonstruktsiya trust (currently the Central Scientific Research Institute of Computer Science named after N. P. Melnikov ), which later became a design institute and was named after him.

In 1949, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Stalin Prize of the II degree for developing the project of the basic metal structures of Unit A of Combine No. 817 (an enterprise engaged in the radiochemical separation of plutonium for the first Soviet nuclear bomb) in 1949.

Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1979 .

He died on June 20, 1982 . He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy cemetery (plot number 10).

Projects and Design

N.P. Melnikov is the author of more than 130 major design works in the field of non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy, nuclear industry, energy, engineering, oil and chemical industry, shipbuilding, transport, space and near-Earth communications, etc.

Under the leadership of N.P. Melnikov, the Institute developed:

  • the design of all blast furnaces , including the world's first all-welded blast furnace;
  • construction of the country's first nuclear reactor ;
  • new types of buildings of the open-hearth, converter and electric arc furnaces;
  • construction duker under the river. Moscow;
  • the construction of high-rise buildings in Moscow on Smolenskaya Square and Uprising Square, the Ukraine Hotel on Berezhkovskaya Embankment;
  • construction of antenna structures in the form of masts and towers up to 460 m high [1] ;
  • a series of typical metal structures of industrial buildings, tanks, bridges, etc.
