Witt, Otto Nikolaus

Otto Nikolaus Witt ( German Otto Nikolaus Witt ; March 31, 1853 , St. Petersburg , Russia - March 23, 1915 , Charlottenburg , near Berlin , Germany ) - Russian and German organic chemist. The son of the Russified German I.N. Witt, a chemistry teacher at the Petersburg Practical Technological Institute. In 1875 he graduated from the Zurich Polytechnic University , then worked at chemical plants in England , Switzerland and Germany. Since 1885, privat-docent, since 1891 professor of technical chemistry at the Higher Technical School in Berlin. Witt developed a theory of the relationship between the color and structure of organic compounds, as well as the theory of dyes and dyeing; first received chrysoidine and tropeolin ; studied and introduced a number of azo dyes into technology; developed a diazotization method for difficultly diazotizing amines . In 1884, Witt discovered indophenols, prepared their leuko compounds, and proposed methods for sulfonation of alpha-naphthylamine .
