Childhood and Youth

Thibaut Courtois was born in Bre , where he began his career at the local Bilsen in 1997. He played in this team for three years before moving to Genk , at the age of eight [3] [4] , where he began to play as a left-back , until he switched to a new goalkeeper position [3] [4] .

Club career

Genk

Season 2008/09

Courtois made his debut in the basic composition of “Genk” against “ Ghent ” on April 17, 2009, at the age of 16 years [3] [4] [5] [6] . Courtois was able to make his debut at Genka at such a young age, only because of the crisis of the goalkeeper position in the team [6] . Courtois began the 2008/09 season as the sixth goalkeeper of the foundation [6] [7] , after Logan Bailly, Sinan Bolat , Davino Ferhulst, Sam Franssen and Cohen Castels [7] . However, after the sale of Baia to the Mönchengladbach Borussia [7] [8] , and Bolata to the Liege Standard , [7] [9] in January in 2009, the third goalkeeper Verhulst became the main [7] , and Franssen and Castels the second and the third goalkeeper, respectively. Then Verhulst was disqualified for two games by the Royal Belgian Football Association for a foul in a match against Liège Standard on March 15, 2009 [10] [11] [12] , while Franssen had a torn leg in his leg and Castells had broken finger [13] . Thus, Courtois got his chance to make his debut in the High Division [6] .

2009/10 Season

Courtois spent the 2009/10 season on the bench, never playing a match for the club.

Season 2010/11

Before the start of the 2010/11 season, head coach Frankie Verkoteren chose him as the team’s first goalkeeper [14] . Since Verhulst had an injury and had problems with the transfer of Hungarian goalkeeper Laszlo Ketelezha [15] , Courtois was selected to participate in the preliminary stage of the UEFA Europa League against Inter Turku in Finland , the home match ended in a 5-1 win for Genk [[ 16] , and the answer is 3: 2 [17] . After three games in the Belgian Championship [18] [19] [20] , on 18 August 2010 Courtois signed his first three-year professional contract with Genk [21] . The next day, Courtois began his professional career with a 3-0 loss from Porto in the UEFA Europa League [22] . Courtois also managed to make his debut in the Belgian Cup on November 9, 2010 in the defeat of his team with a score of 2: 1 from Liège's “ Standard ” [23] . However, in the final game of the champion playoffs against “ Standard ”, “Genk” had to beat “Standard” in order to become a champion, since “Standard” had the same tournament situation [24] . In the match where “Standard” faced the tough defense of “Genk”, Courtois managed to save the goal in the last three additional minutes from the pressure of “Standard”, the match ended with the score 1: 1 [25] , and “Genk” for the third time in his history became the champion of Belgium [26] [27] . This season, Courtois has become a key player in the core squad, having played 44 games for the club [28] [29] [30] . He was also named the Best Goalkeeper of the Belgian Pro League and Player of the Year at Genk [2] .

Chelsea

Season 2011/12

July 14, 2011 Genk and Chelsea agreed to transfer Thibaut Courtois [31] . On July 26, 2011, Chelsea confirmed on its website that Courtois’s transfer was completed and that he had signed a five-year contract with the club. The amount of the transaction amounted to 5 million pounds [3] [32] .

Rent at Atletico
“The club did everything possible to convince the player and his representative to stay in Genka, but failed to do so. (...) Genk had no choice but to accept the Chelsea offer, which is by far the largest deal ever made with respect to a player ”
- Statement by Genka on its website for the sale of Courtois [33] [34] .

On July 26, 2011, Courtois was leased to the Spanish Club Atletico Madrid for long-term rentals. Courtois received the number 13 that David de Gea was the last to wear before moving to Manchester United . [35] [36] His debut for Atletico Madrid took place in a match against Vitoria Guimaraes on August 25, 2011 as part of the second leg of the UEFA Europa League qualifying round 2011/12 . Courtois spent all 90 minutes on the field and kept the score “dry”, “Atletico Madrid” won with a score of 4: 0 [37] . In the championship of Spain, Courtois made his debut in the 1st round on August 28, 2011, leaving the starting lineup for the match with Osasuna , which ended in a goalless draw [38] . Courtois started the season in Spain very well, having played five “dry” matches in the first seven rounds. Examples against Osasuna [38] , Santander Racing [39] , Gijon Sporting [40] , Sevilla [41] and The Granada [42] . On November 26, 2011, in the Madrid derby match against Real Madrid , Courtois, in the 21st minute of the match, was removed from the field for a foul of last hope against Karim Benzema [43] .

Real Madrid

On August 8, 2018, Real Madrid formally announced a six-year contract with Courtois [44] . The first ball in the “creamy” missed from the penalty spot in the match against Leganes .

In the 2018/19 season, Courtois became the culprit of many conceded goals. For example, in the first round in the match against Barcelona, the Belgian conceded five goals, in the 6th round match of the UEFA Champions League against Moscow CSKA Moscow - 3 [45] , and in the 1/8 final match against Ajax made a mistake , allowing Shen to score from a free kick from a long distance, whose goal put an end to the further performance of the “creamy” in the Champions League. In that meeting, Ajax sensationally defeated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu with a score of 1: 4.

International Career

On June 3, 2011, Courtois was called up to the Belgian national team for a match against the Turkish national team as part of the qualifying match for the European Championship 2012 . On August 10, 2011, he was again called up to the national team for a match against the Slovenian national team , but he did not enter the field [46] . He made his debut in the main team of Belgium in a friendly match against the French team on November 15, 2011, which ended in a 0-0 draw [47] .

At the 2018 World Cup, he was the main goalkeeper of the Belgian national team, in which he won bronze medals. Courtois was recognized as the best goalkeeper of this world championship.
