The early years

Margaret Julia Thomas was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 21, 1937 and was the eldest of three children born to the television comedian Danny Thomas and his wife Rose Marie. Her brother is a producer, and the younger sister did not work as an actress for long. She grew up in Beverly Hills, California and graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor's degree [1] .

Marlo Thomas began her acting career with a role in the sitcom "The Joe Bishop Show" in 1961-62, and after that she was a guest in many shows, such as Bonanza. At that time, she made rhinoplasty and corrected her nose, reducing its size [2] .

"This Girl"

The greatest success in his career Marlo Thomas was the main role in the comedy television series " This Girl " about a young actress girl who moves to New York to become a Broadway star, appeared on the screens from 1966 to 1971. The concept of the series, which is considered the first sitcom in the history of television, which was completely focused on the life of a young and independent woman, was based on the personal experience of Marlo Thomas [3] . The series became famous thanks to the demonstration of female independence in a world in which men dominated both at work and at home [3] . The series lasted five seasons and had high ratings until the final, however, the decision to end it was made by Marlo Thomas herself, who was not only the leading woman, but also the producer. Thomas stated that she was not going to play the same character for eternity and it was because of this that she decided to end the show [3] . In 1967, Thomas received the Golden Globe Award, and was also nominated four times for an Emmy for Best Actress in a comedy television series for the broadcast period [4] .

After the series ended, Thomas, as well as Sally Field and Elizabeth Montgomery, faced with the problem of changing roles, as viewers saw the actress only as the heroine of the sitcom [1] . She was nominated for a Golden Globe for starring in the movie “Jenny,” but in subsequent years she was not able to completely get rid of the image of a star of sitcoms [1] . She continued her career starring in comedies and in dramas in film and television, starring in films such as “It Happened Once Upon Christmas” (1977), “Lost Honor to Katherine Beck” (1984), “Permission for Maturity ”(1985) and“ No One's Child ”(1986) and has been repeatedly awarded the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for their game [4] .
