Team History

India has been participating in the Davis Cup since 1921 , when it was still a British colony . The Indian team spent 78 seasons in the Davis Cup, 13 of them in the World Group since its formation in 1972.

Throughout its history, the Indian national team three times received the right to speak in the final match of the Davis Cup. The Indian team is one of only three teams (together with Romania and Argentina ), who have visited the Davis Cup finals more than once, but have not won this trophy.

For the first time, in 1966 , the Indians, after victories in interzonal matches over Germany and Brazil, lost in the Call Round to the current champions, the Australians , with a score of 1: 4.

The second time, in 1974 , it was the Australians who became one of the obstacles for the Indians on the way to the finals and were defeated 3–2, and in the interzonal semifinal, India beat the USSR team led by Alexander Metreveli 3–1 . In the final, the Indians were supposed to play with the South African national team , but since apartheid existed in South Africa at that time, the Indian government decided to boycott the match, which was held on the rivals ’site, and South Africans became champions without a game [1] .

The third time, in 1987 , the Indians reached the finals after defeating rivals such as Argentina and Australia, but were unable to compete on equal terms with the Swedish team , where Mats Wilander , Stefan Edberg and Anders Yarrid then played, and lost 0: 5. Two players of the Indian national team, the brothers Anand and Vijay Amritraj , were in its ranks in 1974 and 1987.

In 2004-08, the national team, as a playing coach, was led by Leander Paes .
