Allenton is one of twenty-seven suburbs in Derby , England , located about three miles south of the center of Derby, between Osmaston, Boulton, Elvaston and Shelton Lock.
History
Allenton (former Allentown, Eng. Allentown ) was named after Isaac Allen, who built the first houses in this place in 1878. One hundred and twenty thousand years ago, during the warming during the Ice Age, this entire area was a swamp on the banks of the river, due to which during the construction in Allenton the bones of a hippo , elephant , brown bear , hyena and even bison were found . The most famous find, the Allenton Hippopotamus , was found during excavation work at the Crown Hotel (founded in 1891). Allenton was then a village 5 kilometers from Derby. In March 1895, during excavation work to build a wall, the Crown Inn smelled foul, and then strange large bones were discovered [1] . It was decided to invest in further research and share this find with the public. Excavations continued over an area of 4.5 square meters, although the bottom of the excavations was covered with water that appeared at a depth of 1.8 m. Water was pumped out by pumps; Hem Bemrose and RM Deeley , who later wrote an excavation report [1], watched the work. The bones were transferred to the Derby Museum , at that time for 16 years as open [2] , which are still exhibited today.
In July 1973, workers found other bones in those places, some of which were also exhibited at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery - a bear, a deer, a bull, a hippo, a rhino and an elephant. The findings contained 1-2 bones, the largest of which was a large hippo tooth [3] . In 2006, Michael Dan Archer was invited by the City Council to capture the history of the region in Allenton. He used laser scanning of bones at the Derby Museum to further imprint them. The sculpture consists of three sections of a broken circle of sufficient size to sit on them; cast-iron copies of hippo bones are placed on their polished surface [4] .
Trade and Services
Allenton has a large open-air market, one of the largest shopping centers in Derby. It was at the market in 2007 that a sculpture by Archer with copies of the bones of the Allenton hippo was installed. There are a number of restaurants and cafes in Allenton, as well as several pubs, including The Miter and The Crown Inn (at the Crown Hotel ). The local fire station is only a few hundred meters from the market, which provides a short response time. The old Derby Canal has been rebuilt into a bike path that leads directly from Allenton to the center of Derby and is part of the national bicycle network. Rolls-Royce plc aircraft engines are located in Allenton.

Allenton's main attraction is Spider Bridge. It is so named for having eight “legs” extending in four directions. To climb the bridge are stairs and ramps for the disabled. The bridge was built in 1971 and during the service it was repeatedly repainted in different colors.
