Anhalt , or Anhalt [1] ( German: Anhalt ) is a historical principality in the territory of modern Germany as part of the Holy Roman Empire , which arose in the 11th-12th centuries under the rule of the Askanians . The principality got its name from the fortress Askaniev Anhalt near Harzgerode . In turn, the name of the genus goes back to the Latin name of their residence in Aschersleben ( lat. Ascaria ).
In the absence of primogeny, the state has repeatedly broken up as a result of hereditary divisions into several small states, for example, Anhalt-Aschersleben , Anhalt-Bernburg , Anhalt-Dessau , Anhalt-Kothen , Anhalt-Zerbst and others.
The united principality of Anhalt was restored in 1570 , but already in 1603 it again fell apart into Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Köthen, Anhalt-Zerbst (and in 1611 - Anhalt-Pölckau as a result of the division of the principality of Anhalt-Bernburg) .
In 1665, the Anhalt-Pöltszau princely line was taken over by Anhalt-Köthen after the extinction of the line of local princes. Anhalt-Pölckau as a result of this simultaneously returned to the Anhalt-Bernburg.
In 1797, after the extinction of the ruling princely line, Anhalt-Zerbst was divided among the rest of the Anhalt princes.
In 1806, the prince of Anhalt-Bernburg received the right to be called the duke from the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Franz II ; in 1807, the status of duchies was also received from Napoleon Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Kothen, having entered the Rhine Union on April 18, 1807. At the end of the Liberation Wars, these duchies became part of the German Union .

Notes
- ↑ In Russian, it was customary to convey this historical name as “Anhalt”. The spelling variant Anhalt, which is closer to the original language, became widespread with the advent of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt (1991).
