Abdin Palace ( Arabic: قصر عابدين ) is a historic palace in Cairo , one of the official residences and the main workplace of the President of Egypt . It is located near the street Qasr El-Nil , in the eastern part of the city.

Construction began in 1863 and lasted for 10 years. The palace was officially opened in 1874 . The cost of building the palace reached 700,000 Egyptian pounds, plus another 2 million pounds spent on its interior decoration.
The palace has 500 rooms. The upper floors of the palace (which previously housed the royal family's dwelling) were preserved in their original form for visiting by foreign guests. On the remaining floors there are museums: the Royal Family Museum, the Presidential Gift Museum, the Arms Museum, the Historical Museum of Documents, etc.
Abdin Palace is considered [by whom? ] one of the most luxurious palaces in the world. The collection of the palace has many jewelry, paintings, watches and other items, many of which are decorated with pure gold. Built to become the official residence of the Egyptian government instead of the Cairo Citadel (which has been the center of the Egyptian government since the Middle Ages), this palace was used for official events and ceremonies.
