Construction

In October 2005, the Romanian government proposed to demolish the old stadium “ Lia Manoliu ” with a capacity of 60 thousand people and build a new, modern arena. After long discussions and finding means to demolish the stadium, they began at the end of 2007, when the last match was held in the arena: in the framework of the qualifying tournament of the European Championship 2008, the Romanian team, which successfully qualified there, defeated the national team of Albania with a score of 6: 1.

The construction of the arena was delayed due to financial difficulties, which is why in May 2009 Sorin Oprescu , mayor of Bucharest criticized the builders and said that they were 20 weeks behind schedule. [4] By October 8, 2009 , it was decided to install a retractable roof worth 20 million euros. [5] In December 2009, work was suspended due to unacceptable weather conditions, [6] however, a year later the stadium was completed. Finishing work was completed in June 2011.

Features

The stadium seats 55,600 people, but in some cases it is possible to expand the capacity to 63 thousand people. The arena has 3,600 VIP seats and 126 seats for journalists (an increase of up to 548 is possible), 360 lounges, a field heating system, 2100 parking spaces and a sliding roof that opens (or closes) within 15 minutes. [7]

Usage

The decision to host the Europa League final 2011/2012 was made in Nyon on January 29, 2009 [8] . Even before this, two major events should take place at the stadium in the presence of 10 and 40 thousand spectators, respectively [7] . The Romanian club Ocelul announced the holding of their matches in the Champions League at the National Stadium.

The stadium was supposed to open on August 10, 2011 with the match between Romania and Argentina [9] , but on July 26, the Argentine national team announced the cancellation of the game because the national team coach was fired after a failure in the America's Cup . The opening of the stadium took place on September 6, 2011 with a match with France as part of the selection for Euro 2012 [10] .

Transport

The stadium can be reached in several ways: by trolleybus, bus and tram routes.
