Palenque ( Spanish: Palenque ) is a municipality in Mexico , Chiapas , with an administrative center in the city of the same name . The population according to the 2010 census was 110,918 people.

Content
General information
The name Palenque can be translated from Castilian as a place enclosed by a picket fence .
The area of the municipality is 1123 km², which is 1.5% of the state. It borders on other municipalities in Chiapas : in the north with Katasaha , in the east with La Libertad , in the south with Okosingo and Chilon , and in the west with Salto de Agua . Palenque also borders the state of Tabasco in the northwest and east, and the state border with Guatemala passes in the southeast. [3]

Economic activity
The working population is occupied by sectors of the economy in the following proportions: agriculture and livestock - 51.9%, manufacturing and manufacturing - 10.4%, services and tourism - 35.6% [4] .
Infrastructure
According to statistics from 2000, the infrastructure is developed as follows [4] :
- length of roads: 570 km;
- electrification: 86.4%;
- water supply: 75.8%;
- water disposal: 56.8%.
Tourism
According to 2000 data, 67 hotels were operating in the municipality, with a total of 1938 rooms.
The main attraction, of course, is the Palenque Archaeological Zone - the ancient city of the Mayan civilization, located 7 km east of modern Palenque. On its territory there are several temples, the tomb of the ruler of Pakal and a modern museum, built in 1995, which presents various finds [4] .
