Family

Princess Carola Frederic Francis Stefania Amalia Cecilia of Sweden was born into the family of Crown Prince of Sweden Gustav and his wife Princess Louise Amelia of Baden. Carola was the granddaughter of King Gustav IV of Sweden , ousted in 1809 .

In the early 1850s, she was considered one of the most beautiful princesses of royal Europe: a slender brown-haired woman with a pleasant and noble appearance. Her grandmother, the Grand Duchess of Baden, wanted to marry Napoleon III . Even preliminary negotiations and a “date” took place, under the pretext of opening a railway from Strasbourg to Nancy, in July 1852. But the bride’s father, who was then dependent on the Viennese court, was against this marriage. Due to the unstable political situation in France and the historical dispute of his dynasty with the monarchy of Napoleon. 20 years later, when Napoleon III lost the French throne, Prince Waza declared: “I foresaw this!”

In 1852 , contrary to the wishes of his father, Carola converted to Catholicism. On June 18, 1853 , Carola married in Dresden the Crown Prince Albert of Saxony . Their marriage was childless.

She had a good relationship with her husband's parents, and in difficult times they always supported each other. The Crown Princess actively began to deal with the social issues of the kingdom. In 1866, she visited the hospitals in Saxony. In 1871, she accompanied Albert to France after her defeat in the war with Prussia.

Queen

In 1873, her husband succeeded his father, King Albert I, which made Carola the Queen. In 1884, the former royal dynasty of Sweden, Vase made peace with the new Swedish dynasty Bernadotte. In this regard, when the remains of her grandfather, King Gustav IV Adolf, her father and brother Ludwig were transported to Stockholm and buried in the crypt of the royal family. In 1888, Carola and her husband made an official visit to Sweden.

Queen Carola made an important contribution to the organization of health care in Saxony, founded many schools, hospitals, boarding houses for patients and homes for the disabled throughout Saxony, for which she became a very popular queen. Carola was widowed in 1902 .
