Childhood

Born on February 27, 1918 in the village of Izbishche [1] in a peasant family. After graduating from the 7th grade of Kazimirovskaya junior high school, he worked on the Komintern collective farm.

Service in the Red Army

Since 1937 he was in the ranks of the Red Army . Then he entered the Tashkent Red Banner Military Infantry School named after V.I. Lenin . In June 1941 he graduated from a military school.

World War II

Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He fought on the Western , Bryansk , Central and 1st Belorussian fronts. During the Great Patriotic War he was wounded 5 times.

Under the command of Major Vasily Petrochenko, the battalion of the 1283rd Infantry Regiment on the night of January 19, 1945 carried out a special mission of the command - crossing the Vistula River. With a group of fighters, the battalion commander was the first to cross the river and started a battle for the expansion of the bridgehead . Soon all units approached. For several hours in a row, the battalion restrained the onslaught of the enemy, and then switched to a counterattack.

With a powerful blow, the battalion under the command of Major Vasily Petrochenko knocked out the enemy from their positions and stormed the city of Vyshogrud (north-west of the city of Warsaw ), which caused panic in the enemy camp and ensured the successful advancement of the main forces of the regiment along the right bank of the Vistula River. In this battle, the battalion was seriously injured, but did not leave the battlefield.

After World War II

After World War II he continued to serve in the Armed Forces of the USSR . In 1949 he graduated from the courses "Shot" . He served in various team positions. He retired to the reserve in 1961 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

After leaving the reserve, the USSR Armed Forces lived in the city of Tiraspol of the Moldavian SSR (today this city is the capital of the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic ). He worked as a master-controller in an agro-industrial association.

He died on December 27, 1991. He was buried at the Dalnee cemetery in the city of Tiraspol.

Rewards

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR of February 27, 1945, for major exemplary combat missions of the command on the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and their courage and heroism, Major Petrochenko Vasily Grigoryevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Medal Star "" (No. 7213).

He was awarded the orders of the Red Banner, World War 1 degree, Red Star, medals.

Memory

His name was carried by the pioneer squad of the school of the village of Kazimirovo, Rudnyansky district, Smolensk region .
