Schröder ritual

Friedrich Schroeder

The Schröder ritual was created by Frederick Ludwig Schröder and is an updated collection of rituals for symbolic degrees of Freemasonry, in which mention of the knightly and Templar degrees was substantially excluded. The ritual was also cleansed of occultism and esotericism [1] .

History

Friedrich Schroeder was a German actor and playwright, director of the Hamburg Municipal Theater. He held the position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Hamburg [2] .

Schroeder entered the history of Freemasonry as a reformer of German Freemasonry. He advocated a return to the most reliable ritual options. He spent almost two decades working on an updated ritual, which now bears his name [3] .

His personal allergy to the chivalrous aspect of Freemasonry led him to correct the ritual in the direction of greater simplicity, which he saw in the revival of the old English ritual and not taking into account the first three degrees of the symbolism of chivalry [4] .

His ritual was freed from the strong influence of Templarism and was accepted for use in 1811 in the Grand Lodge of Hamburg [5] .

Also, the Schroeder ritual was the most democratic of all the rituals practiced in Germany before the Second World War [4] .

Currently, the Schroeder ritual is practiced in the Grand Box of the ancient freemasons and accepted masons of Germany (33 boxes), in the Great East of Brazil (100 boxes), in the Grand Box of Austria, the Grand Box of Hungary, and in some boxes of the Swiss Grand Lodge Alpina , in the last, however, with minor changes [4] .

The ritual created by Frederick Ludwig Schroeder should not be confused with another ritual introduced by Frederick Wilhelm Joseph Schroeder, the head of the Order of the True and Accepted Freemasons - Rosicrucians , founded in 1766 in Marburg . This neo-Rosencrucian and alchemical ritual existed until the middle of the XIX century in two lodges of Hamburg [6] .
