Biography

He received his primary education in Kiev, in 1774 he came to Moscow and entered the gymnasium at Moscow University . In 1777 he received the title of student at Moscow University , and in 1779 he became a seminary teacher at the seminary for the donation of P. A. Demidov to students preparing for professorship. In the same year, he began to teach arithmetic in high school at a university gymnasium, and also corrected the position of translator from Latin and German at a university conference.

Mason , a member of the Moscow box "Osiris", in which the speaker was M. M. Kheraskov .

In 1785 he received a master 's degree in philosophy and free sciences, and from 1788 he began to give university lectures - in geometry, trigonometry and algebra, then - on conic sections ; replaced the deceased D. S. Anichkov at the Department of Mathematics. In 1789 he was appointed adjunct , and in 1795 - an extraordinary professor , and, finally, in 1805 he became an ordinary professor in the department of pure mathematics. Professorship did not prevent him from occupying the post of ephor (inspector) of students. Arshenevsky held this position in the late 80s and early 90s; upon the introduction of the new charter in 1804, he was elected by the university council to be inspectors of the gymnasium and state-owned students. He participated in the opening of the Yaroslavl gymnasium , inspected schools in the Smolensk and Tver provinces.

The great merit of Arshenevsky was the introduction of the theory of curves into the course of mathematics in 1800-1801. He was the first to give a course in higher mathematics (higher geometry) at a Moscow university.

He died after heavy throat bleeding. He was buried in the Donskoy Monastery , near M. M. Kheraskov and the Princes Trubetskoy (plot 3 [1] ). More than 2000 colleagues, pupils of the gymnasium and the university participated in his funeral.

He did not leave any mathematical works; only two of his speeches made by him in public meetings of Moscow University were printed:

  1. “On the Beginning, Communication, and Mutual Aid of Mathematical Sciences and the Benefits thereof” (June 30, 1794)
  2. “On the connection of pure mathematics with physics” (August 30, 1802).

His library and papers burned down in Moscow in a fire of 1812 .
