MPEG-4 Part 14

MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 , officially known as ISO / IEC 14496-14: 2003 , is a media container format that is part of the MPEG-4 standard. It is used for packaging digital video and audio streams, subtitles, posters and metadata , as determined by the MPEG team. Like most modern media containers, MPEG-4 Part 14 provides the ability to display video over the Internet , in addition to the file, metadata containing the information necessary for broadcasting is transmitted. The container allows you to pack multiple video and audio streams, as well as subtitles [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] .

Data Formats

The MPEG-4 Part 14 container supports the following data formats:

  • Video streams: H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 , MPEG-4 Part 2, H.262 / MPEG-2 Part 2, H.261 / MPEG-1 Part 2.
  • Audio streams: MPEG-4 Part 3, MPEG-2 Part 7 , MPEG-1 Audio Layer III , MPEG-1 Audio Layer II , MPEG-1 Audio Layer I.
  • Subtitles: MPEG-4 Part 17.
  • Still images: JPEG , PNG .

Currently, the most widely used combination of H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 and Advanced Audio Coding , since most players have the hardware capabilities of decoding these streams.

Unofficial Extensions

Apple actively uses the MP4 container, but uses its own, not provided for by the standard, file extensions:

  • .m4a is an audio file containing a stream in AAC or ALAC format. May be renamed to .mp4;
  • .m4v - a file containing audio and video streams. May be renamed to .mp4;
  • .m4b - AAC file that supports bookmarks. Used for audio books and podcasts ; used in online stores like the Apple iTunes Store ;
  • .m4p is a protected AAC file. It is used to protect the file from copying while legally downloading proprietary music in online stores such as the Apple iTunes Store ;
  • .m4r - ringtone file used in Apple iOS .

Metadata

MP4 files may contain metadata defined by the standard, such as: file creation time, duration, language code of the stream, album name, legal status of the work, etc.
