AMC (TV Channel)

AMC is an American cable and satellite specialized television channel, which primarily specializes in showing classic films, and also shows a limited number of original shows. The channel was previously called American Movie Classics , but since 2002, in connection with significant changes in programming, it is called AMC . [1] [2]

Channel History

Classic Movie Period (1984-2002)

The AMC channel, then called American Movie Classics , began broadcasting on October 1, 1984, as a pay-TV channel . AMC focused on classic films, mostly shot in the 1950s. Broadcasting went from lunch until early evening. Films broadcast by the channel were not interrupted by advertising; As a rule, they were not intentionally edited or remounted; also not broadcast color versions of films [4] . At the start of its operations, AMC collaborated with Rainbow Media and Tele-Communications Inc. . In those years, the channel also practiced "telethon" to broadcast, for example, films of the Marx Brothers , or showed films of the early cinema era, such as The Phantom of the Opera . In 1987, AMC began contracting with a number of [4] [5] . By 1989, the AMC audience was 39 million subscribers across the United States [5] .

Since December 1, 1990, the channel switched to round-the-clock broadcasting. Since 1993, AMC has been participating in the annual Film Preservation Festival to popularize and expand film preservation assistance.

In 1996, the channel launched the first independent project. They became the series “ ” [6] [7] , which was released until 1998. The series was dedicated to the work of one of the radio stations in the heyday of broadcasting in the 1930s. The series received mixed reviews and won several television awards [7] .

One of the popular AMC programs is the American Pop! , [8] which was broadcast from 1998 to 2002. In addition to broadcasting classic films, the channel aired trailers of post-war films, films shown en: Drive-in , popular science and informational and educational videos that were shown in cinemas in the 40s and 60s before the start of the sessions; musical numbers and songs taken from films of post-war Hollywood.

For 18 years, the AMC channel broadcast films without inserting ads into them. However, over time, AMC began to insert videos between, and a little later, in the films themselves [9] .

Change of format and transition to own projects (2002-2009)

On September 30, 2002, the AMC channel changed the broadcast format from classic films to films of all years of creation and its own projects [10] .

In 2004, AMC launched its first reality show, the FilmFakers project , which turned out to be unsuccessful [11] .

In 2006, AMC filmed its first miniseries .

The channel’s first dramatic series was the Mad Men project, launched in 2007, and very well received by critics [12] . The series has won 15 Emmy Awards .

Breaking Bad - a television drama about a former chemistry teacher with a cancer case who started manufacturing methamphetamine, started in 2008, and also won many awards and received critical acclaim.

Story Matters Here (2009—2013)

May 31, 2009, during the end of the second season of the series “Breaking Bad”, AMC announced the next rebranding of the channel, with a new slogan - “Story Matters Here” [13] . At the end of the year, the channel released the new miniseries The Prisoner .

In 2010, the premiere of the series Rubicon and The Walking Dead took place. The Rubicon series showed low ratings and was closed after the first season. But The Walking Dead expected a high audience interest. As of September 1, 2019, nine seasons of the series have been released, the tenth is being prepared for display.

“Something More” (2013—)

March 31, 2013, during the broadcast of the ending of the third season of The Walking Dead, AMC announced its next rebranding with the new slogan “Something More” ( eng. Something More ) [14] .

Broadcasting the Russian version

On April 8, 2015, information appeared that the popular American cable television channel - AMC, will be launched in Russia. It is planned that within a month AMC will take the place of another American-made television channel, MGM, in Russian cable and satellite networks.

Since April 1, 2015, MGM has been renamed AMC and during this month new content and inter-program content will appear on the AMC, the distributor of the channel Universal Communications said on its website.

In April, several premieres of their own production by AMC, premieres of feature films by Miramax , as well as screenings of feature films by MGM are waiting for viewers of the channel. In addition to MGM films, the channel will broadcast feature films produced by other film studios [15] [16] .

On January 1, 2019, the channel was replaced by Hollywood, the SD version of the Hollywood HD channel, which, in turn, was renamed MGM HD on January 1 [17] .
