Biography
Yuri was born into a peasant family, Russian by nationality. He received secondary specialized education, worked at the factory number 2 of the Leningrad association "Skorokhod" .
In October 1984 he was drafted into the Soviet Army . Since February 1985, he served in the limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan - he was deputy commander of the reconnaissance platoon of the 180th motorized rifle regiment of the 108th Nevel Red Banner Motorized Rifle Division . “On October 11, 1986, during a combined-arms operation in the Charikar region of Parwan province, the reconnaissance platoon of the 180th motorized rifle regiment, acting in the head patrol of the breakthrough group to the 19th outpost, was suddenly attacked by superior forces of the Afghan mujahideen. In the ensuing battle, the enemy attempted to capture the wounded scouts. Petty Officer Yu. Shikov, risking his life, crawled to the wounded. Personally destroyed four rebels, then in hand-to-hand combat together with comrades - six more and rescued the wounded .... On October 13, 1986, the group was attacked while escorting a convoy to the 18th outpost. In the battle, the chief of staff of the battalion, Major Stepanov, was wounded. Yu.
