This Man ... This Monster!

This Man ... This Monster! ( Russian This man ... This is a monster! ) is a storyline published by Marvel Comics in the Fantastic Four # 51 comic strip in June 1966. Later, comic book writer and historian Peter David used the plot as an example in his book Writing for Comics with Peter David ( eng. Writing comics with Peter David ), and the episode with a trap between universes is similar to the 1963 television movie Border Strip . Publication of Comic Book Resources put the cover of the Fantastic Four # 51 issue in first place in the list of best covers with the Creature [1] .

Story

On the street, a member of the Fantastic Four Creature attracts the attention of one of the passers-by. At night, while he sleeps, the man uses one of the devices and transfers Ben’s abilities to himself, and posing as him, goes to the Baxter building in the hope of eliminating Reed Richards , who, in his opinion, uses his inventions to become rich and famous.

Ben wakes up and realizes that he has returned to his usual appearance, and goes to Reed to warn him of the impostor, but Reid mistook Ben for the impostor and drove him out of the Baxter building. Meanwhile, Johnny and his university friend Wyeth Wingfoot get involved in a fight with soccer star Whitey Mullins, who was interrupted by coach Thorne, who offers Wyatt to take Mullins' position on the football team, but Wyeth refuses.

In the laboratory of the Baxter building, Reed is testing his new invention - a portal to the Negative Zone. While Reid himself traveled through the portal, the false Being held a special cable so that it did not move there completely. When the cable broke and Reed moved into the Negative Zone, the false Creature went after him, as he changed his mind about Reed, who independently takes part in a dangerous experiment. Having managed to push Reed back into the “positive” universe, the false Being does not have time to overcome the barrier separating the two universes and perishes.

Meanwhile, the real Ben Grimm went to Alicia Masters to show her that he had returned to his usual form and to offer her, however when he knocks on the door he again becomes covered with stone skin and becomes a Being. He goes back to the Baxter building, where Sue and Reed mourn over a friend. Having appeared, Ben tells them about the impostor and they decide to honor his memory, since whoever he is, he is primarily a man, and Reed owes him his life.
