Brief Summary
The series is dedicated to the activities of the residencies of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Red Army in Western Europe, united under the general name " Red Chapel ", primarily residencies in Paris and Brussels . The group was headed by Leopold Trepper , also known as Jean Gilbert.
The film is far from consistent with historical facts. For example, the action takes place almost exclusively in Paris , while in reality Brussels was the main center of the intelligence network. In particular, “Kent” was constantly in Brussels and was the actual curator of the Belgian group “Red Chapel”. Makarov constantly lived in Brussels.
The fate of "Kent" ( Anatoly Gurevich ) does not correspond to historical truth. Probably, based on these considerations, “Kent”, who lives today, according to the plot of the series, in Paris, was renamed “Grinevich” (Anatoly Gurevich actually lived in Russia and died in 2009 in St. Petersburg ). Mikhail Makarov in the film is named Sergey. “Kent” was arrested in Marseille , Makarov - in Brussels.
There are inconsistencies in the dates of events (in particular, Gilbert-Trepper managed to escape from arrest only in September 1943 ; according to the film, Gilbert was already free by the spring of 1943).
The romantic line (Jean Gilbert - Helene) is an artistic fiction.
Karl Giring led the Red Chapel Sonderkommando only at the beginning. Heinz Pannwitz then replaced him.
Distortions of historical facts and an oversimplified view of the work of scouts became a cause for criticism of the series - in particular, by Anatoly Gurevich , the only member of the Red Chapel who remained alive at the time of the film's release.
