Geography
The absolute height is 38 meters above sea level [2] . The average annual rainfall is 1166 mm, almost all of them fall from May to October. The rainiest month is July, the driest month is November.
Population
According to the 2001 census, the population of the city was 269,138 people [3] . Men make up 53%, women - 47%. Literacy rate is 64% (72% of men and 56% of women). The proportion of children under the age of 6 years is 15%. 71% of the population professes Hinduism ; 27% - Islam ; 1.4% - Jainism ; 0.2% are Christianity and 0.4% are other religions. The main languages of the population: Maithili and other Hindi variants, Urdu is widespread among local Muslims.
According to estimates for 2013, the population is 330 015 people [4] .
