Biography
The future actress was born on September 13, 1900 in the American city of Patten, Maine , born on an American tour of her father and mother, British theater actors. Gladys herself came on the scene in her early childhood and at the age of three she began performing with her parents in a vaudeville entitled “The Trinity of Clovers” [1] . In 1914, she debuted on Broadway in the production of The Engagement, and six years later she first appeared on the movie screen in the drama Hot Dollars. Having starred in several silent films in the early 1920s, Gladys received severe burns in a fire in 1921, and since the actress needed time to recover, her film career ended.
In 1922, she married the loser actor Ben Erway and divorced him eight years later. In the early 1930s, Gladys again began to play on Broadway - thanks to the patronage of her second husband, Edward Fowler, whom she married in 1933 - and in 1934 she returned to the screen. In the same year, she signed a contract with MGM . In 1936, Gladys starred in the drama “Courage is Kerry's middle name” and for her role in this film she was nominated for an Academy Award, which was the actress's greatest achievement of her entire career.
In the period from the late 1930s to the mid 1940s, the schedule of the actress was quite tight. The most significant of her works were the 1937 drama Madame X, the historical melodrama 1938 Marie Antoinette (the actress played the role of Madame DuBarry , and her partners were Norma Shearer , John Barrymore and Tyrone Power ), shot in 1939 by the crime drama Raul Walsh 's The Fate of a Soldier in America and the 1941 film noir No Maltese Falcon , where Gladys played with Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor . By that time, the actress had time to divorce Fowler and acquire a third husband - he was actor Leonard Penn.
Further, the career of the actress, who was already over forty, began to fade. On the screen, she appeared less and less, and more often - on secondary roles. In 1944, she broke up with Penn and two years later she got married for the fourth time, to a certain Kenneth Bradley, but in 1950 this marriage ended in divorce. In the early 1950s, Gladys was diagnosed with throat cancer, and on December 8, 1954, she died in Los Angeles at the age of fifty-four.
