Origin
Havana Bichon comes from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana, which, in turn, came from the now extinct Bichon Tenerife, brought to the Canary Islands by Cubans. It is believed that Blanquito gradually crossed with other types of lapdogs, including poodles, to get what is now known as Havanese. Havana Bichon is the national dog of Cuba .
Description
General view : Havanese has a small size and a strong physique, short legs, drooping ears, his tail hoists in a ring above his back. The coat is plentiful, long, silky and can be of different colors. Havanese has an energetic and curious character and is characterized by an elastic gait, a feature that distinguishes the breed from everyone else.
Color : Rarely completely pure white, fawn in various shades (slight blackening is possible), black, brown, tobacco color, reddish-brown color. It is possible to mix these colors.
Size : Height at the withers: from 23 to 27 cm. Allowed: from 21 to 29 cm.
Weight : from 3 to 5.5 kg.
Important proportions:
- The length of the muzzle (from the tip of the nose to its base) is equal to the distance between the base of the nose and the occipital tubercle. The ratio between body length (measured from shoulder to buttock) and height at the withers is 4/3.
- Head: medium length, the ratio between the length of the head and trunk (measured from the withers to the base of the tail) is 3/7.
Character
Extremely intelligent, it is easy to train as a signal dog. The affectionate and cheerful character makes Havanese an ideal pet for the family. He loves children and can play with them endlessly. He adapts well to almost any environment, and his only desire is to be with his companions - people. Due to his strong social need, Havanets will not be comfortable in an environment where he is isolated from people for several hours every day.
Health
Havanese are generally healthy and strong, with relatively few serious health problems. Life expectancy is from 14 to 16 years. Breed organizations such as the Havanese Club of America monitor genetic problems to prevent distribution in the breed.
Havanese suffers mainly from kneecap dislocation, liver disease, heart disease, cataracts and retinal dysplasia. They may also have problems with excessive tear discharge from the eyes, especially noticeable on white or light colors.
