Biography

Born on August 29, 1909 in the village of Belogorodka (now the Mariinsky District of the Kemerovo Region) in a family of peasant settlers P. F. Palchikov and M. V. Palchikova [1] .

In 1921, Sergei's father died from a kulak bullet. Sergey remained the eldest in the family of a mother, two sisters and two younger brothers. He worked on a collective farm in the village of Belogorodka. He graduated from 7 classes of the school.

He was drafted into the Red Army in 1927 and served in military service until 1929 . After being dismissed, he returned to his native village. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1932 . He actively fought for the consolidation of Soviet power in the countryside. Repeatedly appointed Commissioner for the procurement of bread. Then the party district committee sent S.P. Palchikov to serve in the NKVD bodies.

Until 1942, he served in one of the NKVD units as a squad leader, and then as an assistant platoon commander. Personally detained three criminals who committed murder and robbery [1] .

February 22, 1942 S. P. Palchikov volunteered for the front as part of the 22nd Siberian Volunteer Division [1] . He participated in the defense of Leningrad and in the battles to break the blockade of the 1428th light artillery regiment (65th light artillery brigade, 18th artillery breakthrough division, 3rd artillery breakthrough corps, 42nd army, Leningrad front).

January 14, 1944 the troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts went on the offensive to defeat the group near Leningrad . The calculation of S.P. Palchikov, being part of the mobile tank group, provided the tanks and infantry with fire. For 4 days of fighting, the gunners destroyed the cannon, 2 bunkers and 4 easel machine guns of the enemy [1] .

By the end of January 17, 1944, Soviet troops broke through the enemy’s main defense zone and entered the second zone. On this day, the enemy, fearing the encirclement, began to withdraw his troops operating in the areas of Krasnoye Selo , Ropsha and Uritska .

On January 18, our tanks concentrated to attack the village of Ivanovka, where the Nazis defended themselves. The fourth battery, where S.P. Palchikov commanded one of the guns, took up a position in the vicinity of the village of Glyadino in order to support the attack of the tanks. When the Germans began shelling tanks with heavy guns, our battery returned fire.

The gun crew of the 76-mm regimental cannon of senior sergeant S.P. Palchikov entered into a duel with a German battery of three 155-mm guns. In an effort to increase the effectiveness of fire, S. P. Palchikov rolled out a 76-mm gun for direct fire [1] .

With the first three shots, the calculation of S. P. Palchikov destroyed one of the German guns, smashing it with a direct hit by a shell and destroying the German artillery calculation, after which the enemy’s battery ceased fire on the Soviet infantry and transferred fire to the weapon of S. P. Palchikov [1] .

In a mortal battle, the calculation of S.P. Palchikov destroyed the second enemy cannon. A few meters from the gun of S.P. Palchikov, enemy shells of the third and fourth enemy guns were torn. All our gun crews were killed with fragments, and the commander was wounded. However, S.P. Palchikov, despite his injuries, continued to lead a deadly duel alone. After several shots, the third gun fell silent, and after a few minutes S.P. Palchikov destroyed the last, fourth gun of the enemy battery. At the end of this duel against the weapon of S.P. Palchikov, an enemy tank in ambush opened fire. An exploding shell, the gun commander was mortally wounded and died in the arms of his colleagues.

The battle crew of the gun, led by its commander, honorably completed the combat mission - the enemy’s battery was destroyed, the offensive path to our tanks was cleared.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 21, 1944 for exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism, Sergei Prokofievich Palchikov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .

Memories

After S.P. Palchikov volunteered, the prisoners, who respected him for justice and honesty, began to ask for the front, saying: "If Palchikov went to the front as a volunteer, we cannot sit out here." This is despite the fact that the front could be provided to them only through the penalty units.

S.P. Palchikov was a tall man with a strong physique, and when he studied at the artillery school, due to the scarcity of the food ration, he fainted several times. The doctor insisted on double soldering.

Brother Andrei, who also fought on the Leningrad Front, moving as part of his unit past the cemetery where his older brother Sergei was buried, saw his grave, and then wrote a letter home with the question: “Is Sergey alive?” The sisters - Agafia and Anna, who hid the funeral that had already come earlier from their mother, could not stand it and told her about the death of their son Sergei. Marya Vasilievna, who was very fond of her first child, died exactly three days later. And brother Andrei was seriously injured a few days later and soon died in the hospital.
