Description

Beetle 17–23 mm long [1] . The upper body is copper-red, bronze, green or bronze-black. The margins of the elytra and pronotum are painted from copper red to golden green. Pronotum with 3-5 pairs of marginal setae. The posterior angles of the anterior back come past its base in the form of long, rounded at the end of the blades [1] . On the elytra there are expressed 3 primary spaces in the form of a chain of short ribs, between the pairs of which there are 3 flat secondary spaces. Elytra gaps, located between rows of pits, are rather densely transversely striated. Wings are reduced [1] .

The view is similar to Carabus arcensis , but differs from it in larger sizes, elytra sculpture and coloring.

Range

The species is common in Eastern Europe and Western Siberia [2] , with the exception of the north of the region: from Eastern Ukraine in the west to the Ural Mountains and the Irtysh in the east. The species range in the north reaches the zone of mixed forests, and in the south reaches the borders of the steppe zone . It occurs on the territory of Kamyshinsky (Shcherbakovskaya beam, village of Belogorki) and Zhirnovsky areas. Also, the species is found mainly in the forest-steppe zone, sporadically on the Crimean eggs ( Chatyr-Dag ) [1] .

Features of biology and ecology

The species is confined to deciduous and mixed forests. Most often found in floodplains and deciduous plant associations, usually in moist stony places near streams and small rivers. Also inhabits large beams with massifs of bayrack forests. The biology of the species is not well understood [1] . Beetles are found from the end of May to September, with a peak in numbers from May to June. Development occurs in forest litter, beetles and larvae are active predators with twilight activity - they feed on earthworms , mollusks , caterpillars of butterflies, etc. [1] . Adults hibernate and, possibly, older larvae [1] .

Security Notes

The species is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine as a rare species [1] .
