Laokai ( Vietnamese. Lào Cai , Thy-nom 老街 ) - a province in the north of Vietnam . The administrative center is the city of the same name. On the territory of Laokai is the mountain resort of Shapa .

Geography and climate
The area is 6383.9 km². Most of the province is mountainous. Laokai borders with the provinces of Hazyang , Yenbai , Shonla and Laityau , as well as with China. About 100 rivers flow through the province, the largest of which is the Hongha , which flows through Laokai for 130 km. On the territory of Laokai there are deposits of copper, molybdenum, iron and apatite.
The climate of the province is characterized as tropical mountain, highly dependent on the monsoon. The monsoon season lasts from April to September. The average annual temperature is 23 ° C, however, in the mountains, temperatures often drop below 0 ° C. Forests occupy about 43.9% of the province.
Population
According to 2009 data, the provincial population was 613,075 people [1] , the average population density: 96.03 people / km². The urban population is about 21%. More than 20 different ethnic groups live in Laokai, among them (2008): Vietnamese - 35.9%; Hmong - 22.21%; tho - 15.84%; yao - 14.05%; niangs - 4.7%; Nungs - 4.4% and others.
According to 2013 data, the population is 595,882 people [2] .

Administrative Division
Laokai is divided into the municipality of Laokai (Lào Cai; the status of a city of provincial subordination) and 8 counties.
Economics and Transport
Laokai is one of the poorest provinces in Vietnam, with over 70% of the population living below the poverty line. The basis of the economy is agriculture and forestry (more than 78% of the provincial economy). A checkpoint on the border with China and a developing tourism business also play a rather important role. Laokai is the shortest point of goods on the highway from China to ASEAN countries [3] .
Laokai International Economic Zone is, first and foremost, a modern international border crossing point. To allocate a place for the development of border economic zones, which are located north of the city center, the city’s administrative institutions were moved to the south of the city [3] .
The province is located on the important transport routes of their Hanoi to the Chinese province of Yunnan . Transport includes roads and railways, as well as waterways (mainly the Hongha River). The Hanoi-Laokai railway section is 296 km long and continues to connect with the Chinese railway network. In the coming years, it is also planned to build an airport in the province, there are projects to build a high-speed railway through Laokai, and the construction of a high-speed highway with Hanoi is nearing completion.
