The flag was established in accordance with the National Flag Act adopted by the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament on December 15, 1964, and approved by a special resolution of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly on May 11, 1965. Permission to use the English trade flag was granted by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain in October 1965. The flag was officially adopted on May 12, 1966. Shield crowned with the George Cross on a white background, representing King George III and symbolize British heritage. The bison represents once huge herds of bison, roaming freely throughout the province and serving as a source of food and clothing not only for Aboriginal people, but also for the first European settlers.
