Babites [4] [5] [6] [7] or Babite [1] (obsolete. Babīte [8] or Babīte [9] , Latvian Babītes ezers ) is a relict lake in the central part of Latvia , located in the Babīte lagoon on Riga a plain off the southern coast of the Gulf of Riga , on the border of the Salskaya and Babitsky volosts within the territory of the Babitsky Territory [6] [10] . Refers to the Lielupe basin. Lake Babites has an area of 25.557 km² [2] , thus being the seventh largest lake in Latvia [11] .

Babīte Lake is one of the best places in Latvia for observing waterfowl migratory birds. For birds, this lake is an important place for nesting, plumage and recreation. Among the 184 species of birds that have been spotted on the lake, there are protected bird species, such as: meadow harrier , field harrier , coronet , others.
The lake was given the status of “Nature Reserve of Latvia” [12] . The rules for using the lake, which include the section “High Security Zone”, are established by a regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia [13] . In the "strict regime zone" it is forbidden to move, stay, do business and any other activity, except for the separately indicated items related to the protection of the territory itself, saving people and the period when the lake is completely covered with ice. In addition, several points related to economic activities and scientific research in this area require the written permission of the Latvian Environmental Protection Agency.
Type of lake - lagoon, formed 3000-4000 years ago. Four rivers flow into the lake.

The lake is inhabited by tench , crucian carp , bream , pike , perch , river eel , rudd , carp , roach , pikeperch , and fisher [3] .
