Engineering Intelligence

Engineering intelligence is a type of military intelligence that is organized and conducted in order to obtain information about the engineering activities of the enemy and the terrain .

Tasks of engineering intelligence: to identify places of installation of nuclear mines and other obstacles ; establish the nature and extent of destruction , blockages , fires , floods , natural obstacles and look for ways to get around them; determine the terrain, the condition of roads and bridges ; to obtain data on the water barrier; scout places convenient for forcing ; determine the protective and masking properties of the area; identify sources of water suitable for use; determine the availability of local building materials.

For conducting engineering intelligence, regular intelligence units of the engineering troops and other units are involved. For reconnaissance, the following are assigned: engineering observation posts (IPP); photographing posts (PF); engineering reconnaissance patrols (IRD) and individual sappers - scouts (units) as part of combined-arms intelligence.

Engineering intelligence units are equipped with engineering reconnaissance vehicles ( IRM "Zhuk" , IPR , etc.), as well as instruments for monitoring the enemy and the terrain, for reconnaissance of mine-explosive barriers, for reconnaissance of terrain off-road, for reconnaissance of water obstacles and bridges , for determining distances, for photographing.
