The ceremonial of Benedict XVI ( Ceremonial of Benedict XVI ) again restored some of the papal vestments that had previously been disused.

Papal shoes
Pope Benedict XVI resumed the use of traditional red papal boots that have not been used since the beginning of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II . Unlike the initial press speculation that the shoes were made by the Italian fashion house Prada , the Vatican announced that the shoes were provided by the pope's personal shoemaker . [one]
Camauro
At general audiences on December 21 and December 28, 2005, Papa put on a kamauro twice, a traditional red papal hat that is usually worn in winter. This has not been observed since the pontificate of Pope John XXIII ( 1958 - 1963 ). Since September 6, 2006, the Pope began to wear the red Capello Romano (also called Saturno ) - the traditional wide-brimmed hat of the Roman clergy. It was rarely used by John Paul II, but his predecessors wore it constantly.
Mozzetta
Pope Benedict XVI has also restored the use of all three forms of papal mozzetta . So far, John Paul II only used the red satin summer mozzetta, Benedict XVI also used the winter papal mozzetta and Easter mozzetta, both of which in the past were worn by Pope Paul VI . Winter papal mozzetta is made of red velvet and edged with white ermine, and Easter mozzetta, worn only during Easter , is made of white damask silk and edged with white ermine.
Pallium
During his intronization speech, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the meaning of pallium, and he used an ancient version of the vestments , Eastern cut, used by the popes of the first millennium. However, starting with the feast of Saints Peter and Paul ( June 29, 2008 ), Pope Benedict XVI returned to a uniform similar to the one worn by his recent predecessors, although in a larger and longer cut and with red crosses, therefore remaining different from pallium wearable metropolitans . [2]
Benedict XVI also returned to wearing the traditional forms of other liturgical vestments to emphasize the continuity of the papacy and the church. [3]
Tiara
One of the items that Benedict XVI does not wear today is the papal tiara . Like his two immediate predecessors, Benedict XVI decided not to be crowned with a tiara during his intronization Mass , and he has not worn it since. However, unlike his predecessors, the Pope emphasized this decision to break with tradition, because he began to use the miter instead of the tiara in his coat of arms . Other traditional papal vestments also remain unused, including papal gloves and papal shoes .
Criticism
Franco Zeffirelli
Franco Zeffirelli , the famous Italian filmmaker of numerous magnificent productions, criticized the Pontiff 's vestments as being too " luxurious ." He said that "this is not the time to wear high style in the church." Zeffirelli believes that the clothes of Pope Benedict XVI are “too luxurious” and make the pontiff’s appearances cold and estranged from his surroundings. The Vatican explained Benedict XVI’s use of traditional vestments, such as the old, very high mitres during his Christmas address “ Urbi et orbi ”, pointing out the need to “emphasize the continuity of the liturgical celebration today with what characterizes the life of the church in the past.” The pope’s liturist compared the use of vestments by wearable previous dads to annotations in papal documents, where “the pope refers to the pontiffs who preceded him in the dignity to show the continuity of the church’s teaching.”
Italian Association for the Protection of Animals and the Environment
In August 2008, the Italian Association for the Protection of Animals and the Environment called on Pope Benedict XVI to stop wearing animal furs, such as ermine trimmed camauro and mozzetta, the use of which he had revived. The group mentioned Papa’s famous love for cats and drafted an online petition to try to convince Benedict XVI to switch to synthetics. [4] [5]
