Rudolf Anhalt-Zerbst ( German: Rudolf von Anhalt-Zerbst ; October 28, 1576 , Harzgerode - August 20, 1621 , Zerbst ) - Prince Anhalt-Zerbst of the Askaniev clan.

Biography

Rudolph is the fifth son of Prince Joachim Ernst and his second wife, Eleanor of Württemberg , daughter of the Duke Christoph Württemberg . He was an eager pupil and student. In 1597, the 20-year-old Rudolph was invited to Copenhagen at the wedding ceremony of King Christian IV of Denmark. In 1600, he went on an educational trip to Rome , where he met with Pope Clement VIII , and then traveled to Sicily . Together with his brother, Prince Ludwig, Rudolph spent one year in Florence . On November 21, 1601, Rudolph was enrolled in studies at the University of Siena . One year later, in 1602, Rudolph returned through Switzerland to Dessau . Since 1603, he lived at the Zerbst court and supported the Zerbst gymnasium Franciscaum by founding his library.

After the joint rule, Rudolph and his brothers shared Anhalt in 1606: Johann Georg became Prince of Anhalt-Dessau , Christian - Anhalt-Bernburg , Ludwig - Anhalt-Köthen , and a few years later Augustus became Prince of Anhalt-Pöltskau . Rudolph became the ruler of the Principality of Zerbst , which included the Amts Kermen, Lindau , Roslau and Coswig .

Under Rudolph, several buildings were built in Zerbst and the palace-palace was renovated. In 1618, Rudolph was adopted by his brother Ludwig into the Fruitful Society . Rudolph died at the age of 45 and was buried in the Zerbst church of St. Bartholomew.

Descendants

On December 29, 1605, Rudolf married in Wolfenbüttel to Dorothea Gedwig Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsky , daughter of the Duke Heinrich Julius Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsky . They were born:

  • daughter (1606)
  • Dorothea (1607–1634), married to Duke Augustus II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1579–1666)
  • Eleanor (1608–1680), married to Duke Frederick Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg (1581–1658)
  • daughter (1609)

On August 31, 1612, the second wife of Rudolph was Magdalena of Oldenburg , daughter of Count Johann XVI of Oldenburg . Thanks to the brother of Magdalena, the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst received the possessions of Yeever in 1667. Married to Magdalena:

  • Elizabeth (1617-1639)
  • Johann VI (1621–1667), Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, married to Princess Sophia Augusta Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (1630–1680)
