About the hospital

City Hospital No. 2 was founded in 1991 . In 1992, a federal loan was allocated, thanks to which, in 1992-1996, with the active participation of German specialists, an additional modernization and reconstruction of the diagnostic and operating units of the hospital was carried out. The result was a hospital built according to European standards: an operating unit for 19 operating rooms, small rooms with separate bathrooms, cozy halls and lounges [1] . The hospital was officially opened on July 1, 1993.

Currently, the hospital is the largest specialized multidisciplinary hospital in St. Petersburg and the entire North-West region. The hospital of the City Multi-disciplinary Hospital No. 2 is on a par with the largest federal healthcare institutions in terms of equipment, qualifications of specialists, hospital capacity, complexity of tasks, and the use of high-tech treatment methods. It is a training base for medical universities and research institutes. The hospital is among the ten best medical institutions in Russia. This is the only clinic in the region where a European safety standard has been introduced and is in force for the patient.

The treatment and diagnostic departments are equipped with the most modern equipment and tools, including computer and magnetic resonance imaging scanners, an angiographic complex, equipment and devices for operating and resuscitation rooms, laser diagnostic and manipulation facilities, an automatic laboratory complex and much more.

The structure of the hospital includes city specialized scientific and practical centers (neurosurgery, cardiosurgery, ophthalmology, spinal surgery, intensive pulmonology and thoracic surgery, maxillofacial and plastic surgery), which are headed by prominent scientists from Russia and St. Petersburg.

Over the years, the hospital has rightfully taken a leading position in the region and a strong position in the international market. On the basis of the hospital, city, national and international conferences, symposia and seminars on topical issues of medicine with the participation of prominent scientists from Russia and foreign countries are regularly held, exchange of advanced technologies with foreign partners. The hospital treats more than 40,000 patients every year. Of all those treated in hospitals in St. Petersburg, one in ten is a patient of the city multi-disciplinary hospital No. 2.

First Neurosurgery Department (Department of Neurosurgery No. 1)

The department, which is one of the leaders of Russian neurosurgery, is headed by professor, doctor of medical sciences Shulev Yuri Alekseevich.

Hospitalization of patients is carried out in a planned manner, by transfer from the neurological and neurosurgical hospitals of the city. Assistance is also widely provided to patients from other regions of Russia and the CIS countries.

The main areas of surgical activity of the neurosurgical department of the hospital № 2 are:

- treatment of degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine (hernias of the intervertebral discs, stenosis of the spinal canal)

- treatment of oncological diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord tumors)

- treatment of vascular pathology of the brain (ischemic disease of the brain, surgery of cerebral aneurysms)

-functional neurosurgery (treatment of pain syndromes, in particular trigeminal neuralgia , hemifacial spasm , glossopharyngeal neuralgia)

- treatment of peripheral nerve damage

- treatment of traumatic brain injury

The department is equipped with modern operating rooms (equipped by Carl Zeiss ), operating microscopes, endoscopic and stereotactic units, an ultrasonic destructor, equipment for intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. This allows you to carry out the full range of neurosurgical surgical interventions at a high technical level. The neurosurgical department is designed for 60 beds.

Surgical activity in 2010 was 79%, which is one of the highest rates in the city among neurosurgical hospitals.

The development and further implementation of new surgical interventions based on the principles of minimally invasive neurosurgery continues - the removal of tumors of the chiasmal-sellar region with transsphenoidal access using endoscopic assistions, removal of tumors of the base of the skull, plastic surgery of the peripheral branches of the facial nerve, instrumental fixation of craniovertebral articulation in traumatic joints. Minimally invasive interventions are introduced without creating an interbody block in degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the cervical spine.

The technique of microvascular decompression of the cranial nerves in the cerebellopontine angle has been improved. Intraoperative electroneuromyographic monitoring with microvascular decompression due to hemifacial spasm has been introduced into practice, which also improves the treatment results of patients suffering from this disease. Monitoring of the integrity of the facial nerve during interventions in the area of ​​the cerebellar cerebellar angle (vestibular schwannomas, basal meningiomas) has been introduced into routine practice, which has improved the functional results of treatment of this group of patients. A comparative statistical analysis of the department’s work shows that the register of performed diagnostic manipulations and surgical interventions corresponds to the multidisciplinary nature of the medical institution.
