Special Effects
The creation of special effects during the filming of this film was not dealt with Ray Harrihausen , who is mistakenly credited with this, but Willis H. O'Brien . Willis H. O'Brien before that was the creator of the “ stop-motion ” animation effects for the original King Kong (1933) , he was also the director of special effects on the set of this film, but with a lower budget than on the set of King "Kong." Pete Peterson, who worked with O'Brien on The Mighty Joe Young , and after Black Scorpion on The Hippo Sea Monster , created most of the animation [1] . O'Brien borrowed the same techniques and special effects from his previous films. The miniatures used for the spider and the giant worm were the same as those used in the shooting of the original King Kong (1933). The large “head” of the scorpion was used to shoot shots at it from close range. The sounds made by giant scorpions were created by processing from the sound effects made by the giant ants used in the film “They!” ( Them! ), 1954 [2] .
