History
The modern coat of arms of Asturias dates back to the 18th century , when the previous four-hour was replaced by a coat of arms with a golden cross on a azure field with an inscription in Latin around the emblem. This cross, which the Spaniards themselves call the “Cross of Victory,” is a symbol of the liberation of Spain from Muslim rule and the end of the Reconquista . The classic Christian symbols Alpha and Omega , attached to the crossbar of the cross, were added a little later.
The motto "HOC SIGNO TUETUR PIUS, HOC SIGNO VINCITUR INIMICUS" can be translated as: "We keep the pious with this sign, the enemy will be defeated with this sign." The coat of arms of Asturias assumed its modern appearance on April 27, 1984.
