The 1997 UEFA Cup Final is the final match of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup , the 26th season in the history of the UEFA Cup . The first final match took place on May 7, 1997 , at the Parkstadion stadium in Gelsenkirchen . The second leg took place on May 21, 1997 , at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan . The German Schalke 04 and the Italian Internationale met in the match. Both matches ended in victories for the home team with a score of 1-0, and in the penalty shootout the German club turned out to be stronger. This was the last UEFA Cup final, held in the format of two matches.
