History

Hail was the center of the possessions of the Al-Ali dynasty of the Shammar tribe. In 1836, power over the city passed to the Ar-Rashid clan from the same tribe. The first amir from the ar-Rashid dynasty, Abdullah bin Rashid, completed the palace in the city, now one of the local attractions - Barzan [6] (the total area occupied by the palace complex is 300,000 m² ).

Unlike local Sunnis or, especially, Wahhabis , the emirs of Al-Rashida were tolerant of representatives of other faiths, in particular, merchants, among whom there were many Shiites [7] .

General view of the city.

By 1891, Hail was the capital of a large state , occupying a significant part of Arabia [5] .

The construction of the railway at the beginning of the 20th century (1908) of the Hijaz railway damaged the economic life of the city through which camel caravan routes passed [5] .

In 1921, the Saudi king Abd al-Aziz captured Hail and overthrew the local dynasty of rulers [5] .

Population

The city's population is growing rapidly: if in 1992 there were 176,757 people, in 2004 - 267,005 people, then in 2010 - 310,897 people [2] .

Economics

The basis of the local economy is oasis farming. Cereals , dates and fruits are grown here. Up to 60% of all Saudi wheat is grown in the Hail area [5] .

Transport

Hail is connected to the major cities of the country, located south, by a modern highway. The city has an airport .
