Geography
Chapleau is located in the northwest of Sudbury County, near the border with Algoma District . Geographically, township, like the rest of the district, belongs to the Northeastern Ontario region . The nearest cities are Sault Ste. Marie , Timmins and Sudbury .
Next to the Township is the Royal Game Reserve Chaplou a total area of 7000 km² [2] .

History
The first Europeans to come to these places were employees of the Hudson's Bay Company , who in 1777 founded a trading post 80 km from modern Shaplo. The founding date of the townchip is considered to be 1885 , when the Canadian Pacific Railway carried out a railroad here [2] and built a station on it. The town got its name in honor of Joseph-Adolf Shaplo , the then Canadian politician, businessman and journalist.
Population
According to the 2006 census, there were 2,354 people living in the city. For comparison, in 2001 (according to the census), 2,832 people lived (a decrease of 16.9% over 5 years) [1] .
The average age of the population is 40.0 years (compared with 39.0 on average for Ontario). For men, the figure is 39.9 years, for women - 40.1 years (38.1 and 39.9 for Ontario, respectively). 80.5% are residents aged 15 years and above [1] .
According to the 2006 census, 660 families were registered in the territory of the town [1] .
For almost 1.5 thousand people, English is the mother tongue. French carriers are almost two times less [1] .
Transportation
Near the city passes the highway Ontario Highway 101 , from which to Killarney held route Ontario Highway 129 .
Through Chapleau runs the railway.
Township has its own airport .
